Web Development Whirlwind Class by James Halliday (substack)
Web development can be a confusing place with new approaches appearing constantly. We'll cover some simple tools to manage building a webapp in an incremental way, adding new tools only when necessary. We'll focus more small tools that do one fundamental thing well instead of spending a bunch of time in configuration files.
We will cover:
- front end architectures
- virtual DOM libraries
- universal rendering
- build scripts and frontend tooling
- how to handle URLs
- managing other assets
- talking to the server (ajax, websockets)
Skill Level and Pre-Requisites
James Halliday has written lots of tiny node modules including dnode, browserify, optimist, and seaport. He draws silly cartoons and always has dozens of mad science experiments laying about. James built underwater robots in Alaska and then moved to Oakland and co-founded browserling.com and testling.com. He says he is on a mission to empower developers to write lots of tiny modules and tiny services instead of giant monoliths. Beep boop.
