Event description

Description

Last year's electoral nastiness and its aftermath have been deeply troubling for many of us. We struggle to make sense of what happened, find our grounding, and respond skillfully. Many of us are still shocked, sometimes we point fingers, and occasionally we despair. Yet many of us knew that whoever won the election, the nasty wounds that have been exposed would remain and require long-term healing. Similarly, financial stresses, serious illness, death of loved ones, family conflict, and climate disruption create storms externally and internally. Buddha-Dhamma and the fruits of its practice offer invaluable resources for weathering these storms as they blow through us. This retreat will present practical strategies and skills for living with the inevitable storms of life and death.

Buddha-Dhamma offers perspectives and frameworks for examining and discerning the inter-dependent realities around and inside us. Courage and compassion are key aspects of the wise, skillful patience and tolerance needed. Mindful presence and grounding within breathing bodies are crucial foundations.

We will review and test drive specific meditation skills that, when sufficiently cultivated, can be applied whenever the need arises. While we have responsibility towards the outer storms, we have more immediate influence upon the inner storms. By practicing within Sangha we shape how we respond to the storms that also affect our behavior in groups.

This retreat will take place in noble silence and simplicity. There will be ample opportunity for sitting meditation, walking midst the Port's pleasant grounds, personal reflection, and journaling. Talks and dialogue circles will explore the themes of the retreat.

Retreat taught by:

Santikaro trained for almost two decades as a Theravada bhikkhu, mostly at Suan Mokkh in Southern Thailand where he lived with Ajahn Buddhadasa and became his primary translator. His training continues here in the Midwest, as an upasaka, where he is co-founder of Liberation Park, a modern expression of Buddhist practice, study, and social responsibility, located in rural southwestern Wisconsin. He has been teaching in the Chicago area since his return "home" in 2000 and is active teaching around the Midwest and further afield. Life's vicissitudes have given him some acquaintance with cancer, addictions, globalization, and other challenges that he explores regularly. (Please visit www.liberationpark.org for more, especially updates on the new facilities now being completed to serve retreatants such as yourself.)
