Event description

Description

Local Theater Company is proud to present this community conversation about wearing the hijab during the month-long run of our production, Wisdom From Everything.

Mariam Shareefy will discuss how the ideology of hijab limits a woman's access to education, work and healthcare. Mariam is a Pashtun, humanist, socialist, rock climber, women's rights advocate, and refugee activist, who has spent her life working to empower Afghan women, children, refugees and ex-Muslims. She is the founder of Afghanistan's Entrepreneurship and Rock Climbing School, a nonprofit organization that combines entrepreneurial and business classes with the active power of rock-climbing to empower, educate and develop young entrepreneurs in Afghanistan.

She is a refugee from the Taliban now living in the United States.

Mariam has also been actively involved with issues facing Afghan immigrants in Colorado, and has started a small project that teaches female Afghan refugees how to rock-climb, adapt, and more easily assimilate into US culture.
