Event description
We Represent targets minority, low-income, college students for government-funded international exchange. For us, by us. March 10-12

About this Event

Study abroad has historically been seen as only available to white upper-middle- and upper-class students; others are the exception and not the norm. We believe this disparity is due to inconsistent levels of support for international opportunities at U.S. colleges and community colleges, especially but not limited to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs); lack of knowledge of existing scholarships to combat limited economic resources; and lack of relatable role-models. We believe students will be well served by a personal connection and insight on exchange opportunities.

We decided to address this challenge directly by targeting racial and ethnic minority students, low-income students, students with disabilities, members of the LGBTQI+ community, and community college students and providing them with the encouragement of relatable role-models in pursuing exchange programs.

During our conference, our student attendees and staff members will gain the knowledge that Government-sponsored exchange programs exist, acquire information on exchange programs and accessible application tips, and make a connection between advisors, alumni, and students. After the conference, each institution will have: an enhanced capacity to support applicants; an exchange- interested community including faculty, staff, alumni, and students to serve as a resource for future applicants; and the connections and framework to hold similar informational events in the future.
