Join WE NYC and the Consulate General of Brazil in New York for this event and get the financial skills you need to start and grow your business in the United States!

This event is designed for women entrepreneurs with a goal of starting or growing a business in the United States. We will help you build competency in financial literacy and understand the basic personal and business financial components you need as an entrepreneur in this country.

The day will feature:

  • A thought-provoking panel discussion with successful Brazilian women entrepreneurs who will talk about the lessons they have learned throughout their entrepreneurial journey in the United States. Panelists will include Teresa Figueira, President of T&T Translation, Patricia Spuri, Owner, Lobo Salon, Fernanda Paronetto, Founder & CEO, Behind the Scenes NYC, Lucia Cruz, Founder of Beija Flor Bar and Restaurant and Sonia Bueno, Owner of Brazil Brazil 46 Restaurant. The panel will be moderated by Mila Burns, Anchor/Editor-in Chief at Globo Notícia Américas and Founder of Gumbo Media.

  • A talk covering the Strategies to Establish and Maintain Good Credit. Establishing a good personal credit history is key if you plan to start or grow your business. Do you know your credit score? Do you understand the relationship between your personal credit score and your business? This talk will teach you the keys to understand, improve and maintain a good credit score.

  • A workshop to help you Learn to Attract Funders to Start and Grow Your Business. This workshop will teach you about conventional and alternative sources of funding that you can tap into when you are starting and growing your business. You will have the opportunity to learn how to self-diagnose your compatibility with each of these potential funding sources and how to practice your business pitch so you can make your entrepreneurial dreams a reality!

  • The option to receive a one-on-one credit consultation with a certified financial advisor.

  • An opportunity to network with business leaders and other entrepreneurs in the community.


Please note the event will be conducted in English and Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation. Translation services will be provided by Teresa Figueira, President of T&T Translation and Regina Pierantoni McCarthy, Translator/Interpreter/Voice-Over Talent at Turner Broadcasting.

A light breakfast will be provided by Fogo de Chão Brazilian Restaurant. Refreshments will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.




More about our Panelists:

  • Moderator: Mila Burns, Anchor/Editor-in Chief at Globo Notícia Américas and Founder of Gumbo Media. Mila Burns is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies at Lehman College (CUNY). She is the author of Dona Ivone Lara's Sorriso Negro (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019) and Nasci para Sonhar e Cantar (Editora record, 2009). She earned her Ph.D. in History in 2017 from The Graduate Center (CUNY). She also has an M.A. in Latin American Studies (Columbia University, 2012), and an M.A. in Social Anthropology (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, 2008). For more than a decade, Mila has been a prominent journalist in Brazil and New York. She is currently the anchor of Globo Notícia Américas. The newscast is dedicated to the Latino community and is broadcast on Sundays at TV Globo Internacional. Mila Burns has contributed to several Brazilian publications, such as O Globo, Bravo, Marie Claire, and SuperInteressante. She lives in New York since January 2009, with a one year gap, when she left the city to travel around the United States driving an RV. She is the owner and founder of the media producer company Gumbo Media.

  • Teresa Figueira is a Portuguese Conference Interpreter who has worked with several Presidents, Prime Ministers, and high-level officials from lusophone countries. She works regularly for the United Nations, the US Department of State, IMF, World Bank, as well as major corporations, banks, and law firms. Teresa is the Founder of T&T Language Solutions, which provides Portuguese, French, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese interpretation services and equipment for major events in the United States. When cross-cultural communication is essential for the success of diplomatic, business, legal interactions, among others, T&T is your source for top-quality professionals and equipment.

  • Patricia Spuri is the Owner of Lobo Salon, an oasis of Brazilian expertise in hair care, style, and joy. Patricia Spuri, co-creator of her late husband’s success, carries on this distinctive philosophy in their sleek boutique salon on the heart of Manhattan. As a Head colorist, Ms Spuri leads her stuff by example, still inspires her devoted proteges as they fulfill the mission to provide expertly colored highlights and face-framing cuts for all hair textured while setting the standards for superior customers satisfaction, matching transformative, accessible products with her expert eyes for the classic, elegant hair style that will make each client feel great.

  • Fernanda is the Paronetto, Founder & CEO of Behind the Scenes NYC (BTSNYC), which she started from Brazil, 1 year before moving to NYC in April 2014. Prior to moving to NYC, she worked for companies like Vogue Magazine, Quintessentially, Iguatemi (Shopping Mall) Group and Kimberly Clark. Today, Behind the Scenes NYC is considered one of the top platforms for visitors and locals that want to explore New York off- the-beaten-path. The idea has always been to highlight and share the work of the local community running independent businesses and start-ups, helping them spread the word and prosper, to an audience that wants to explore NY far from the touristy scene, like a local. Fernanda has been featured as one of “New York’s Top Travel Entrepreneurs” on the HuffingtonPost, had her personal story highlighted on GoalCast, Glamour Brazil and other publications. In addition to the online publication, BTSNYC offers Corporate Concierge working with multinational companies organizing events, meetings, and customizing out-of-the-box experiences around NYC.

  • Lucia Cruz is the Founder of Beija Flor Bar and Restaurant, located in the heart of Dutch Kills on Long Island City. She comes from a small rural town 75 miles from Fortaleza, in North-East Brasil, and has been a New Yorker for more than 30 years. Lucia has found her calling in her family tradition of food business, opening her first restaurant Barril Grill, in New York in 2001 and, with a new vision to offer food and music from Brazil, she opened Beija-Flor Bar and Restaurant in 2013. Beija-Flor is a cozy space, combining rustic elements from Brazil and modernity of NYC. It showcases Brazilian cuisine with elaborated dishes made with the best quality products and fresh produce, and offers music such as samba and forró in a hospitable ambience and friendly service.

  • Sonia Bueno started her career more than 22 years ago as a waitress and grew steadily into the positions of General Manager and Partner. About 10 years ago she became the full Owner of Brazil Brazil 46, a cozy restaurant in the heart of the New York Theater District. Brazil Brazil 46 offers the finest Brazilian dishes and cocktails with a menu that reflects the varied cultures and colors of Brazil. With an inviting bar area and a pleasant row of tables next to the sidewalk, Brazil Brazil is layered with a friendly Brazilian hospitality.
