Description

Region 10 Quality Council Second Annual Stakeholder Meeting and Conference!

We Are Better Together: Building Communities for All

Do you want to learn how to build better relationships in the community either for yourself or for someone you support? Have you ever thought to yourself..."Is this truly the life that I want?" or "Is this truly what the people who I support want in their lives?" We are inviting you to attend our Second Annual Conference to hear from two presenters who are passionate about these topics, and who can share with you new approaches to how you can make improvements in your life or the lives of people you support!

8:30am-9am Registration

9am-9:30am Welcome and Introduction

Relationship and Community Engagement (9:30am – 11:30am)

At times, we have fallen into keeping people busy rather than focusing on the commonality we all share: the desire for personal relationships and to be contributing members of our community. Paid staff and other service recipients often outnumber an individual's family and friends. Having a valued social role and to be a part of one’s neighborhood requires more than shopping at the local store. More genuine and meaningful relationships that are a match for both the individual and community members need to be developed. You will hear real stories of people who have been successful in forging new and rekindling old relationships and “giving back”. In this 2-hour session, you will learn:

  • approaches to support people in building relationships and community engagement
  • identify at least 2 key methods to address barriers to community relationships and engagement
  • leave with at least 2 ideas to try for community engagement, for people you support

Presented by Lori Jasper, STAR Program Services Consultant

Lori Jasper has been the project manager and leading implementation on two separate DHS grants on relationship and community engagement over the past 4 years. Additionally, Lori is a 2-Day Person-centered Thinking and a Picture of a Life Trainer. Lori has been supporting people who use disability services since the 1980s in a variety of positions from certified occupational therapy assistant, direct support professional, manager, trainer, and co-founder of a provider agency. For the past 4 years, Lori has been providing planning facilitation, training and consultation.

A Picnic Style lunch will be provided at 11:30am (Please contact Kerri Leucuta if you have special dietary needs).

Person Centered Outcomes (12:30pm -- 2:30pm)

This 2-hour session is for people responsible for the development of meaningful outcomes. Rule 245 D says that outcomes must be meaningful and desired by the person. The Olmstead rule says that outcomes are achievement of what is most important to the person in ways that work for them and build on their strengths. Historically we have developed outcomes that are intended to “fix” and most often not desired by the people we support. This session will help us understand true person centered outcomes and how they can lead to lives that are desired by the people we support.

Presented by Betsy Gadbois, Director of Person Centered Practices, Owakihi

Betsy is one of the premiere trainers in Minnesota in the area of person-centered services. She has over 30 years of experience working in residential services, individualized housing and day services with individuals with disabilities and those who support them. She is passionate about people having positive control over the lives they choose.
