Event description

Description

Working Artist Wednesdays (WAW) is Amplify Arts’ series of professional development workshops for artists that takes place on the first Wednesday of each month. WAW 2019 features 3 units, each focused on a different theme. Each unit is designed to:

  • strengthen peer networks and relationships with arts professionals,
  • promote collaborative learning,
  • give working artists tools they need to apply for grants, exhibitions, and residencies with confidence,
  • successfully start and run a small business, and
  • tap into national and local resources

Unit 3 in 2019 is devoted to strategic financial planning, setting goals, and learning more about practical approaches to stay on track and tools keep those goals within reach. All four sessions in Unit 3 will be led by visual artist and Film Streams’ Finance Manager, Erin Foley. Each session is $5.00 or purchase a year-long Amplify Arts’ Artist Membership for $60 and attend a year of WAW sessions for free, plus access a host of other benefits throughout the year.

All sessions are free for UNO students with a valid student ID. Special thanks to UNO's College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media and their Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Franchising for making this partnership possible.

*Each session is recorded on video and uploaded to Vimeo with captions, so even if you can't come in person, register anyways and we'll send you the recording after.

Unit 3 Session Descriptions

September 4th @ 6:30pm // Setting Goals: Financial Planning

Setting and meeting financial goals in a gig economy can be challenging, especially for artists with multiple streams of revenue that fluctuate from year to year. How do you create a budget that accurately reflects your income? How do you responsibly allocate funds to cover your needs, wants, and still put away some money for a rainy day? What proven budgeting strategies can you implement to sustain a long-term studio practice? Join Erin Foley, Finance Manager at Film Streams, for a candid discussion about setting financial goals and sticking to them.

October 2nd @ 6:30pm // Staying on Track: Debt Management

Student loans, credit cards, mortgages--debt can put serious stress on an active creative practice and impede our desire and ability to focus on producing new work. Hefty monthly payments and interest that never stops accruing can throw a major wrench into even the best-laid plans to set and stick to a budget. Erin Foley, Finance Manager at Film Streams, will lead a special WAW session that tackles debt, debt management strategies, consolidation, and alternative repayment plans that can help free up funds, while paying down your debt, to reinvest in yourself and your creative practice.

November 6th @ 6:30pm // Know Your Worth: Pricing Your Work

A big part of setting and meeting financial goals is knowing what you’re worth. How valuable is your time and how do you assess that value? How do you create market-responsive pricing structures that take your time and studio expenses into account, while cultivating a committed audience or collector base? Join Film Streams’ Finance Manager, Erin Foley for a session that will help you conscientiously price your work to establish, develop, and maintain an active market.

December 4th @ 6:30pm // Planning Ahead: Quickbooks Tutorial & Expense Tracking

There are plenty of software programs out there that will help you manage budgets, track expenses, and create invoices. Quickbooks is one of them. Close out 2019, prepare for tax season, and get off on the right foot in 2020, by joining Erin Foley, Finance Manager at Film Streams, for an in-depth Quickbooks tutorial that will help you get organized and recommit to your financial goals in the year to come.
