Event description

Description

Working Artist Wednesdays (WAW) is Amplify Arts’ series of professional development workshops for artists that take place on the first Wednesday of each month. WAW features 3 units per year, each focused on a different theme. Each unit is designed to:

  • strengthen peer networks and relationships with arts professionals,
  • promote collaborative learning,
  • give working artists tools they need to apply for grants, exhibitions, and residencies with confidence,
  • successfully start and run a small business, and
  • tap into national and local resources

The second unit in 2019 is devoted to opening doors, getting your work out there, and accessing opportunities. Participants can expect to learn more about exhibiting their work, circulating it in print format, and sharing it in an artist talk. All four sessions in Unit 2 will be led by Chief Curator and Director of Programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Rachel Adams. Each session is $5.00, or purchase a year-long Amplify Arts’ Artist Membership for $60 and attend WAW for a year for free, plus access a host of other benefits throughout the year.

All sessions are free for UNO students with a valid student ID. Special thanks to UNO's College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media and their Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Franchising for making this partnership possible.

Session Descriptions:

May 1 // 5:30 PM -- Exhibition Opportunities

A robust exhibition history is one way to reflect an active and engaged studio practice, but where do you start? Where do you find listings for exhibition opportunities? How do you connect with curators and exhibition spaces? What can you expect in terms of support when working with commercial spaces versus alternative and non-profit spaces? Join Rachel Adams, Chief Curator and Director of Programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, for a candid discussion about how to get your foot in the door and where to go from there. Bring either a digital or hard copy of an old application or materials you've previously submitted for an open call opportunity. (PLEASE NOTE: This session will begin at 5:30pm)

June 5 // 6:30 PM -- Publishing and Self-Publishing

Print is not dead. Artist books and zines have a long, time-tested tradition of functioning as powerful marketing tools that continues today. Although making artist books and getting them out into the world can be an effective way of generating new audiences, there are some key factors to take into consideration when approaching publishing or self-publishing for the first time. Join Rachel Adams, Chief Curator and Director of Programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, for a session that tackles the pros and cons of both, assesses the current climate of arts publishing, and gets you on the way to circulating your work! Please bring a copy of your favorite artist book, zine, or monograph with you to this session.

July 3 // 6:30 PM -- Writing and Delivering an Artist Talk

Speaking about your work in public can be an intimidating prospect, but it’s also a great opportunity to explain what you do and why you do it to a captive audience. During this WAW session Rachel Adams, Chief Curator and Director of Programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, will lead participants through some organizational tips and tricks that can help ease the pressure of public speaking, engage your audience, and keep your talk on track. Participants must register for this session if they’re interested in securing one of the ten slots available to present their artist talk during August’s session.

Aug 7 // 6:30 PM -- Artist Talks

During this special session of Working Artist Wednesdays, participants who attended July’s session will have the opportunity to deliver their artist talk in front of peers, arts professionals, and representatives from Omaha metro arts organizations. Only 10 slots are available, so register early. Rachel Adams, Chief Curator and Director of Programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, will serve as the evening’s MC. This session is open to the public free of charge.
