Event description
What secret treasures and horrors can be found in the Mitchell Library’s hidden rooms, stacks and basements?

About this Event

What secret treasures and horrors can be found in the Mitchell Library’s hidden rooms, stacks and basements? Collaborate on creating an online “Choose Your Own Adventure” game, with aspects of “Dungeons and Dragons” to reveal them to the world!

The Mitchell Library holds a wide range of material in its many collections including rare books, general reference and a large collection of patents for inventions. The Mitchell also house the City Archives which began in the 12th century. In the game we’ll make, the player has to discover a number of items from these sources, all related to boats, ships, the sea, or other types of waves. With the easy-to-use Twine tool, you’ll create a section of the game, concealing one of the items (linking to a picture of the item itself). You can also add effects like concealed doors and self-destructing documents using some simple pieces of computer code we’ll provide.

The workshop begins with a tour of the areas of the Mitchell Library not usually open to the public, including the mysterious stacks where a ghost is said to walk, abandoned statues, a vanishing harpsichord, and a room that must be kept locked. You don’t need any experience of coding, dungeons and dragons, or hidden doorways to take part and we’ll provide the computers. At the end of the session, the different parts of the story created by workshop participants will be combined into an online game that you can play or share with family and friends.
