Description

Alexandria, Virginia, May 11, 2018 - June 13, 2018 — The solo exhibit by Christine Lashley, “Water’s Edge”, will explore her fascination with water in her impressions of fragile watersheds, shorelines, and cultivated gardens. Over 40 paintings will be on exhibit, including large works created in the studio as well as studies done on location.

Shorelines highlight the health status of an ecosystem. Varied plants and animal life show a thriving land- scape in balance versus shores with a lack of biodiversity. Christine seeks out the complexity of the wa- ter’s edge in natural areas and in cultivated gardens. She is drawn to semi-wild, exuberant gardens where nature is allowed some freedom and native plants encouraged.

Christine’s paintings are about time spent in nature. Depicting small streams or vast bodies of water, her art captures the warm glow of a sunrise on the marsh or the feel of humidity in the air on a summer’s day. Her work explores how water visually transforms the environment, but she goes beyond realism to show her personal connectivity to the scene. Painting “en plein air” (on location) helps her create larger works later in the studio because her location studies are key to remembering what is important. Often she puts away all reference and works only from memory, abstracting and merging ideas. Color harmonies are explored and trivial details reduced to portray the essence of what it feels like to be immersed in nature. Experimental textures give the surface three-dimensions, evoking the layers seen in nature, with thick layers of oil paint, thin glazes and varied marks with unconventional tools (fingers, scrapers, knives, and mural brushes).

“Gardening for many years and studying geology in college got me thinking beyond the ‘pretty’ water view into the complexity of what the edge of a body of water represents,” says Christine of what has inspired most of her paintings and what makes the work personal. “I gravitate towards things I have come to know intimately, such as shores where I camp with my family and Virginia hiking trails where I watch the sea- sons change.”

Born in America but transplanted to Europe as a teen, Christine’s first plein air paintings of water were a rushing alpine stream in Norway and the waterlilies at Giverny (Claude Monet’s gardens) which she has since visited in all seasons. She went on to study in Paris at the Parsons Art Institute and the Sorbonne, and worked for several years in the fashion industry in Europe. After returning to the US, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Christine’s paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally, winning many First Place awards for both landscape and figurative work. She has recently been given awards by Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. She is a frequent participant in juried outdoor painting competitions such as Plein Air Easton, Bath County, Richmond, and Telluride, and for the past few years, she has won hon- ors at all events attended, including 2017 Quick Draw First Place at both Richmond Plein Air and Bucks County Plein Air. Her work has been published in North Light Books, American Artist Magazine, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air Magazine, and The Washington Post. She teaches art work- shops locally and internationally.

Broadway Gallery will be hosting paintouts (weather permitting) in April for the public to see Christine paint plein air in Northern Virginia (more details at broadwaygalleries.net).

The artist will do an art demonstration at Broadway Gallery in Alexandria, VA, on Saturday, May 12, from 2pm-3pm, followed by an opening reception from 3pm-6pm.
