What is WaterFire?

Waterfire is an award-winning sculpture installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence and has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance. WaterFire’s eighty sparkling bonfires, fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, flickering firelight on the arched bridges, silhouettes of the fire-tenders passing by the flames, torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of over ten million visitors, bringing life to downtown, and revitalizing Rhode Island’s capital city.

What is Clear Currents?

Waterfire's Clear Currents commemorates the opening of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Combined Sewer Overflow; an initiative that has greatly improved the water quality throughout the bay area.  Each year, the Overflow Bypass Tunnel prevents one billion+ gallons of untreated sewage from entering the Woonasquatucket River and the Narragansett Bay. So you are not only participating in a wonderful artistic event, but an important initiative for our community.

On September 15th the Clear Currents portion of the evening's Waterfire event will incorporates 100 illuminated Japanese koi (fish) temporarily mounted on canoes and kayaks that registered participants will paddle up and down the river after sunset. The light from these brightly colored fish will beautifully compliment the 80 wood burning braziers installed on the river!
