Event description

Description

Not long after the glaciers retreated 12,000 years ago, people began to depend on Lake Champlain for life. An amazing natural resource for recreation and inspiration; what better way to reflect upon and appreciate our lake than through watercolor. Join us for a morning of watercolor at North Beach led by local artist Katharine Montstream.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials including:
watercolors,
brushes,
a med sized container for water (like an empty yogurt)
paper that is on a block or is taped down to a wood board in case it's windy and
a pallette to mix paint, like a plastic plate, tupperware, or an actual watercolor palette.
These supplies can be picked up at Black Horse / Vermont Art Supply on Pine Street. Some materials will also be provided to share.

Workshop Leader Bio: Katharine Montstream grew up in the flatlands of Connecticut and couldn't wait to move to Vermont as soon as she was old enough. She studied at Green Mountain College and the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Painting has been her full time gig since 1988. She started out by making hand made watercolor greeting cards, and in two years she sold over 15,000 -each one individually painted- to shops in New England. The next year, Montstream Studio started printing her images and they began selling the greeting cards nation wide.

In 1989, her painting career took off after she had her first solo show at a favorite bar in Burlington, the Daily Planet. The images were of buildings, big gardens and the sky line of Burlington. Since then she's had multiple exhibits in Vermont and focuses on her favorite subjects, the lake, mountains, snow, woods, swimming holes and Burlington's iconic Moran Plant. Katharine's next exhibit will be watercolors and oil paintings of swimming holes. You can find this show at her gallery in Burlington on St Paul Street, across from City Hall Park.

Community Naturalist Series: Creative Exploration of Burlington’s Natural Landscapes

This three-part series of creative workshops is inspired by and focused on Burlington’s natural landscapes. All workshops are open to the general public but require pre-registration. Sign up for just one, or all three! Workshops will teach different ways to celebrate place through art. Workshop participants will be encouraged to use what they learn to produce a piece of artwork or writing to exhibit at a community art show at the South End Art Hop in September.

The other two workshops in the series are:

1. Poetry Writing with Angela Patten

May 19th: 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Oakledge Park (meet at the Treehouse)

2. Drawing In Place with Lauren Sopher

June 23: 9:30-11:30 am at Arms Forest with a meeting at Burlington High School
