ACTIVITIES

9 AM – 11 AM | Rain Barrel Workshop | $55 | Meet at AlexRenew Environmental Center Lobby

Are you interested in living green and protecting the Chesapeake Bay? Rain barrels collect rainwater and reduce erosion from your downspout. They also help you save money on your water bill! You can attach a hose to your rain barrel and use it to water your plants and flower beds. The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES), Stormwater Management Division — with its Northern Virginia Rain Barrel Program partners — invites residents to learn about water quality issues and build a rain barrel to take home after the workshop.

Classes are $55. Online registration through the city is required prior to workshop, and space is limited. This workshop is sponsored by the City of Alexandria Transportation and Environmental Services.

10AM – 2PM | SafeAssured Child Identification | Environmental Center Lobby

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Department will host a SafeAssured Child Identification booth in the lobby. SafeAssured Child Identification kits are free to families with children 16 and younger. The kits are available on a first come, first serve basis.

11 AM – 1 PM | Waterways by Bike Tour | Starts from AlexRenew Environmental Center

Experience the beauty of local Alexandria waterways by bike! We will leave from AlexRenew, bike through Old Town viewing the Potomac River along the way, and end at the grand opening of the Four Mile Run Pump Station Education area in Arlandria. Learn how you can help preserve our local waterways and enjoy snacks and pressed juice from South Block.

There are no road closures, so riders are asked to please stay to the right of the road. Be sure to ride at a safe speed and obey traffic laws at all times. We ride rain or shine.

11:00 AM-11:45 AM | Water Inspired Family Dance Class | Environmental Center - 6th Floor Community Space
Local Motion Project presents : Water in Motion
Learn a dance inspired by water at this family event. Discover how dance and water bring communities together. Local Motion Project is what happens when dance and ideas collide. We offer meaningful dance education to Alexandria. (Must sign up in advance)

11AM – 1 PM | Discovery Lab | Environmental Center–6th Floor Community Space

Come meet our microbes! Microbes include bacteria but also other little life forms. At AlexRenew, we harness their pollution cleaning power to transform dirty water. Microbes are so small that you can’t see them with your eyes alone. You’ll use a microscope to get a look at these tiny critters!

1 PM – 2 PM | Facility Tour | Starts from AlexRenew Environmental Center

The best way to learn how we make dirty water clean again and protect our waterways is by taking a tour of our facility. See first-hand how we use science and engineering to transform dirty water into renewable energy, a free soil amendment for local Virginia farmers, and clean water that we return to the Potomac River. You’ll be walking around an industrial facility, so closed-toe shoes and pants are required.
