On December 3, Excelsior College will celebrate the launch of the Excelsior College English as a Second Language Writing Online Workshop (ESL WOW) – a free, publicly available resource within the school’s Online Writing Lab (Excelsior College OWL).

The event will be highlighted by a Keynote Address given by Howard Pomann, Director of the Institute for Intensive English at Union County Community College. His talk is entitled “Teaching English Language Learners How to Learn” and it will be livestreamed across the web for free to those who register above.

Keynote Description:

 Howard Pomann

Instructors and their students are increasingly faced with the challenge of using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in ways that are effective for achieving language learning objectives.  Most CALL software provide students with various pathways, options, help and tools to complete a task.  However, students are often unaware of the different language learning strategies to apply these options and do not understand how these strategies will assist them to meet their language learning goals.  In this presentation, we will discuss a learner training model which focuses on technical, strategic, pedagogical and reflective training to assist students to become successful strategic autonomous language learners.  These learner training principles will be applied to the English as a Second Language Writing Online Workshop (ESL-WOW).  Specific learner strategies for ESL-WOW will be explored.

Prof. Howard Pomann is the Director of the Institute for Intensive English at Union County College.  Prof. Pomann has extensive experience in the areas of curriculum development, teacher training and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).  He has directed several grants and given numerous presentations on the integration of CALL into the ESL curriculum and CALL learner training.  His publications include several ESL textbooks and ESL software.
