Event description

Description

  • Do you want to be a part of a growing waste conversation to help move Wellington towards becoming a zero waste city?
  • Are you an individual or a member of a community group that is passionate about reducing waste in your community?
  • Are you a Wellington business interested in reducing your waste and that which you pass on to your customers?
  • Are you working with or for council to help reduce Wellington's waste?

Hannah and Liam, the two No-Waste Nomads behind The Rubbish Trip, are back in Wellington and ready to give you an update on the waste situation in New Zealand's North Island (as they see it)! After almost 6 months travelling through the North Island, delivering talks and presentations about how individuals can reduce their household rubbish, Hannah and Liam have picked up a thing or two about rubbish along the way (they've also picked up a lot of actual rubbish... specimens will be on show).

Running the project on a budget of $20 a day, they've stayed in the homes of countless waste-busting strangers (now friends), met screeds of businesses and community groups taking real and creative action to reduce rubbish (and helping others to do so too), heard countless landfill stories that would make you weep, and had their ears to the ground when it comes to public, council and government attitudes to waste reduction. Not only this, but they have maintained their zero waste lifestyle while living on the road - from camping at Cape Reinga to foraging in Auckland Central, they've got all the tips for zero waste road tripping and are keen to share these with you also.

The presentation will traverse some of the key themes Hannah and Liam have observed in individual, community, business and council action to reduce waste around the country - from awesome and truly inspiring ideas and approaches, through to things to avoid and insights to learn from and develop. In our shared endeavour to reduce Wellington's waste, it makes sense to hear about what's going on in other parts of the country, join the dots, make connections, and draw lines in the sand about what we do and don't want our city's waste landscape to look like.

You are invited to attend this warm-up event for The Waste Conversation 'unconference', an initiative to bring together Wellington low-waste innovators and entrepreneurs, the Wellington City Council and leaders of waste reduction from around the world, to inspire, share knowledge and develop plans and actions to achieve and extend the Wellington City Council waste minimisation plan. The talk will be delivered by The Rubbish Trip, and is supported and co-hosted by Waste-ed and Sustainability Trust.
