Description

Run the Ridge!

On Sunday, October 15, 2017, the inaugural Washington State Speedgolf Championship will be held at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington, home of Washington State University. Host to numerous USGA amateur qualifiers and the men's and women's Pac-12 Championships, Palouse Ridge is an undulating and picturesque links-style track that will challenge both your running and golf skills. From the gray tees to be used in the tournament, the course plays to approximately 6,200 yards and requires approximately 5.5 miles of running, including approximately 750 feet of elevation gain.

Tournament Weekend Schedule

Saturday, October 14 at noon: Reserve your tee times for practice rounds. (See below for details.)

Saturday, October 14 at 5:30 p.m.: Optional two-hole speedgolf time trial and exhibition for fun and swag. Meet at first tee.

Saturday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.: Pre-tournament dinner for players and their guests at Banyans on the Ridge, Dinner costs $30 per person and is not included in the entry fee. (Please indicate how many will be in your dinner party when you register.)

Sunday, October 15 at 8:00 a.m.: Mandatory caddie/scorer meeting in front of the clubhouse to go over caddie/scorer rules and how to score and time your player.

Sunday, October 15 at 8:30 a.m.: Mandatory players' meeting in front of the clubhouse to go over local course rules and discuss any last-minute changes to the tournament.

Sunday, October 15 at 9:00 a.m.: Pro and amateur 18-hole events start. Players will be sent out in five-minute intervals, with player order determined by previous speedgolf scores, 5K running times, and/or golf handicaps.

Sunday, October 15 at approximately 11:30 a.m.: Awards ceremony outside of the clubhouse.

Tournament Rules and Scoring

The Official Rules of Speedgolf will govern play and scoring. In addition, this tournament will be the first-ever (to our knowledge) to also capture players' hole-by-hole timings in addition to their hole-by-hole golf scores. Thus, we will be able to post players' speedgolf scores (strokes + minutes) on a hole-by-hole basis. To facilitate this more sophisticated form of speedgolf scoring, we hope to be able to use an early version of the speedgolf tournament scoring software (with live online leaderboard) being developed by Chris Hundhausen. Stay tuned for updates.

Running Caddies/Scorers

All players are required to have a running caddy/scorer (RCS) who runs along with them during their tournament round. RCSs will perform the following duties:

  1. Help their player find their ball (forecaddying is encouraged).

  2. Rake sandtraps for their player.

  3. Repair ball marks on greens made by their player.

  4. Enter their player's score and time into the scoring system on a hole-by-hole basis using a smartphone. (Directions on how to do this will be discussed at a mandatory RCS meeting on the morning of the tournament.)

While RCSs are allowed to provide players with advice and encouragement, players are still required to carry their own equipment (bags, clubs, balls, tees, etc.) and food/water, per official speedgolf rules.

All players have the option to bring their own RCSs with them to the tournament, Aside from the abiltiy to keep up with their players,RCSs must meet three additional requirements:

  1. They must have access to a smartphone that has cellular data coverage at the tournament (all major carriers provide cellular data at Palouse Ridge).

  2. They must be able to attend the RCS meeting at 8 a.m. on the day of the tournament.

  3. They must be committed to following the above rules and accurately and honestly recording player scores and times.

If you do not bring your own RCS, we will pair you with a friendly and capable RCS recruited from the local running club or local high school/college cross country teams. On the checkout page, you will be asked whether you would like us to pair you with a local RCS.

Pro Purse

Pro competitors will be eligible for earnings from the tournament purse. In addition to the sponsorship money that we secure, at least $75 of each pro entry will be added to the purse. We anticipate a minimum purse of $1,000, but we will not know the size of the purse until closer to the event. At least the first, second, and third-place finishers in the pro event will be paid out. Stay tuned for more details on how the top finishers will be paid out.

Saturday Practice Rounds

For those wishing to play practice rounds (highly recommended!), we have secured a reduced rate of $47 (cart included, if you wish) for tournament participants on Saturday, October 14. To reserve a tee time, please call the Palouse Ridge Pro Shop directly at 509-335-4342 and say you're playing in the Washington State Speedgolf Championship. If you want to play your round with other speedgolfers, just ask the clubhouse what other speedgolfers have reserved times.

Entry fees

The pro entry fee is $150 (plus processing fee), and the amateur entry fee is $75 (plus processing fee). The entry fee includes a high-quality golf (polo) shirt with touranment logo (Nike Dri-Fit or similar). Depending on the sponsorships and donations we receive, players may also receive additional goodies. If you can help us out with sponsorships and donations, please contact Rex at rexschultz@pga.com. It is also possible to give a donation to the tournament directly through this event page.

Getting to the Tournament

Seven miles west of the Washington-Idaho border in southeastern Washington, Pullman is a five hour drive from Seattle, a six-hour drive from Portland, and a 90 minute drive from Spokane.

If you would like to fly here, you have three airport options: Spokane International Airport (75 miles north), Lewiston (Idaho) Airport (38 miles south), and Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport (2 miles from golf course). If you wish to fly into Spokane, we will be organizing a free shuttle to and from Spokane International Airport. Please e-mail Rex at rexschultz@pga.com if you are interested.

Accommodations

For our out-of-town guests, a room block has been reserved at the nearby Marriott Courtyard in Pullman, which offers a free shuttle to the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport, and is an easy walk or short free shuttle ride from the tournament venue. The discounted room rate is $159/night. To reserve a roomin the block, call 509-332-1500 and say you're with the Washington State Speedgolf Championship. The cut-off date for reserving rooms under this block is September 6, 2017. While the Marriott Courtyard offers the most conveniently-located lodging, a web search will yield several cheaper lodging options in Pullman, WA and nearby Moscow, ID.
