Event description

Description

Are you a lay leader or pastor who seeks to ground your commitment to justice in a deeper spirituality, and connect with the message of the scriptures in a more profound way? Are you looking for an educational opportunity that allows plenty of room to breathe, reflect, and integrate what you’ve learned? The Washington Island Forum experience is what you’re looking for.

About this year's speaker

Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is a celebrated spiritual author and sought-after speaker. He is a graduate of Eastern University and Duke Divinity School. A native of rural North Carolina, evangelical minister Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove tries to live by what he believes to be the Bible’s essential message: Love your neighbors. Take care of the poor. Be with those who are suffering. He has been active in fighting the death penalty, supporting undocumented farmworkers, and advocating for the homeless. Along with other clergy and social-justice activists, Wilson-Hartgrove helped Rev. William Barber organize a series of protests called Moral Mondays in North Carolina’s capital, Raleigh, following the state legislature’s sharp turn to the right in 2011. His recent book, Reconstructing the Gospel: Finding Freedom from Slaveholder Religion gets to the heart of this nation’s original sin of racism.

About the Forum

The Forum is cosponsored by the Wisconsin Council of Churches and The Christian Century magazine. Enjoy worship, workshops, discussion, and contemplation in an ecumenical retreat setting on Washington Island, just six miles off the tip of Door County Wisconsin. The week begins on Monday afternoon with a welcome and opening picnic at Trinity Lutheran Church. Tuesday through Thursday, ground yourself in morning prayer, then attend presentations by our speaker at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center. In the afternoon, choose optional discussions or island recreation. Friday begins with a Eucharist, features a final presentation, and concludes by noon.

Daily Schedule and Lecture Themes:

  • Monday: checkin begins 3 pm; opening picnic 5 pm
  • Tuesday: How the Religious Right Distorted Our Moral Narrative
  • Wednesday: Reclaiming Moral Language in the Public Square
  • Thursday: Reading the Bible with the Rejected
  • Friday: A National Call for Moral Revival

Daily sessions Tuesday-Friday 9 am-noon, optional afternoon discussion 2-3 pm
Midweek Vespers offered Wednesday evening

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the Forum?

For those traveling by air, the closest larger commercial airport is Austin Straubel Airport in Green Bay. If flying, we recommend that the flight arrive in Green Bay no later than 1:00pm on Monday or leave before 5:00 on Friday. It is approximately a two and a half hour drive (including the ferry ride) from Green Bay to Washington Island. If you prefer the General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee, the travel time to the Island ferry is about three and a half hours. Be sure to check the ferry schedule and plan accordingly.

Where should I stay? What are my dining and recreation options?

Lodging, meals and recreational opportunities are offered by numerous Island establishments. More information can be found at the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce website. Homes and cabins are available for rent through Door Passage Vacation Rental and sites like VRBO, Flipkey and HomeAway.
