This one day seminar focuses on the Science of Reading Instruction with highly respected authorities in the field.

About this Event

The Wasatch Reading Summit-Spring Seminar will now be held VIRTUALLY due to prevention of COVID-19 in Utah. It will still be on March 28th from 8:30-2:30pm with the same schedule but attendees will not be allowed to come in person and will participate via online virtual livestreaming.

Attendees will be sent a link and password a few days before the conference to view the livestream. All attendees will also have access to the recordings until October 1, 2020. We will have a live chat option and live technical support for anyone having difficulties viewing the conference.

Morning Session

Dr. David A. Kilpatrick

8:30 am - 10:45 am

Dr. David Kilpatrick will be speaking about Rapid Automatic Naming and Phonemic Awareness.

DAVID A. KILPATRICK, PHD is Associate Professor of Psychology for the State University of New York, College at Cortland and teaches courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology. He is also a New York State Certified School Psychologist and has done over a thousand evaluations of students with reading difficulties during his 27 years with the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District. David currently conducts research on reading difficulties and does professional development workshops for educators. He is also the author of Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties and Equipped for Reading Success.

Afternoon Session

Dr. Louisa Moats

12:15 pm - 2:30 pm

Dr. Louisa Moats will be speaking about Structured Literacy Explained: Assessing and Improving Instruction.

Louisa Moats, Ed.D., has been a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on the topics of reading, spelling, language, and teacher preparation. She began her professional career as a neuropsychology technician and teacher of students with learning disabilities. She earned her Master’s degree at Peabody College of Vanderbilt and her doctorate in Reading and Human Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

In addition to LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), Dr. Moats’ books include Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers (Brookes Publishing); Spelling: Development, Disability, and Instruction (York Press); Straight Talk About Reading (with Susan Hall, Contemporary Books), and Basic Facts About Dyslexia (with Karen Dakin, International Dyslexia Association). She is well known for authoring the American Federation of Teachers’ “Teaching Reading is Rocket Science.”
