Meet at Portland House micropub (Welbeck Abbey Brewery) for a Cask Ale Week guided beer and brewery walk of Ecclesall Road and Napier Street. In the 1870's Sheffield was the northern capital of brewing with 30 breweries and hundreds of pubs and beerhouses. Three breweries (Wards, Old Albion and Wheatley and Bates) dominated this former industrial and residential area just off Ecclesall Road. We will see the sites of all of them and using photographs, old maps and memorabilia find out about their role in the social and industrial history of the City. Finish at Weatherspoon's Sheaf Island pub (Part 2 - Hunters Bar end of the road to follow next week).
