Description

Roman Ondak
Teaching to Walk

May 2 – September 30, 2016
Monday – Friday, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
On the High Line at West 13th Street

Roman Ondak (b. 1966, Slovakia) presents Teaching to Walk, an ongoing performance where the artist invites individual mothers or caregivers with eight-to-twelve-month-old sons to teach them to walk in the park. The performance is informed by the artist’s memory of watching his wife teach their son to walk. This program is part of Wanderlust, a group exhibition that explores the themes of walking, journeys, and pilgrimages.

Guidelines (Please read carefully)

-          High Line Art invites pairs of mothers or female caregivers and young sons to participate in the shared activity of teaching and learning to walk.

-          Each pair should consist of one mother or female caregiver over the age of 18 and one male child between 8 and 14 months of age.

-          Each pair should spend at least 20 minutes on the High Line teaching/learning to walk.

-          The pair should spend this time on the High Line at West 13th Street, under the arch of The Standard, High Line.

-          Ideally, each mother/caregiver and son will come 2 to 3 times over the course of a few days or weeks, but not after the child has mastered his first steps.

-          Each participant will receive a small token of our appreciation for their participation, available at the reception desk at the High Line Headquarters. Participants can pick up their gift after their performance. The High Line Headquarters are located at 820 Washington Street. Participants can take the elevator at the Gansevoort Street entrance to the High Line to the 4th floor.

-          Please sign up for as many days as you think you are able to attend!

Disclaimer
While we wish we could invite daughters and fathers to participate in this act, for the artist it is important that the performance is a recreation of his own personal memory of his wife teaching his son to walk. Please note that while there is a of course a performative element to this piece, it will not be a formal performance with an audience every day—the audience will be composed of the perhaps unwitting visitors taking part in your child’s first steps on the High Line.
