Event description

Description

As vehicle traffic and our population grows, connecting the region’s 2077 miles of sidewalks, nearly 300 miles of trails and 4,150 miles of roads to our transit system gives us mobility options critical to maintaining our quality of life, supporting economic growth, and improving the Lehigh Valley’s health. The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission and Lehigh Valley Transportation Study are embarking on the development of the region’s first bicycle and pedestrian plan, called Walk/BikeLV. This nine-month long effort will:

  • identify and prioritize a bike network that is usable by all ages and abilities of cyclists

  • develop a strategy to connect the sidewalks to create a seamless walking system usable by all ages and abilities, even the mobility-impaired

  • connect both sidewalk and cycling networks to transit and trails

  • designate a combination of on-road and off-road (think trails) commuter corridors for cyclists to travel to job centers

  • identify and develop a strategy for fixing unsafe areas for pedestrians and cyclists

  • explore the potential of a regional bike share program

  • coordinate with partner initiatives from the Lehigh Valley Greenways trail and environmental partnership to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Connects initiative

  • connect to nearby regions and states

  • suggest health initiatives that support the longevity and livability of the region

  • include a funding strategy to begin to make mobility improvements throughout the Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley Transportation Study’s Multimodal Working Group will be leading the effort and we ask for your participation.
