Walk the Walk: How to Know if You’re the Right-Fit for a Progressive School
Event Information
About this Event
When looking for the ideal candidate, school recruiters tend to build from their school’s foundation – school culture.
During the hiring process, many schools describe their school and ideal candidate with terms like:
- Restorative
- Trauma-Informed
- Anti-Racist and/or committed to Diversity/Equity/Inclusion
- SEL (social-emotional learning)
- Mindfulness
- Whole child
But what does any of it really mean?
What does it mean for school culture? What does it mean for candidates? If you identify with one or more of the terms, what questions should you ask during the hiring phase to ensure alignment?
Join Mister V, a former school administrator and an educator coach, to explore these and more questions to help teachers understand school culture to find the right-cultural-fit.
In this session, you will gain valuable insights into how to best position yourself to be hired by your preferred school and learn how to determine whether the progressive policies and strategies advertised by your potential employer are actually materializing in the school's culture and climate.
* Dial-in information will be provided upon registration.
Audience: PK-12 teachers looking for their culture match and right-fit school.
Facilitator: Hemanth Venkataraman (a.k.a Mister V) is a former school administrator who has hired dozens of educators (including classroom teachers, counselors, social workers, deans, and administrators) and who currently coaches schools on the effective implementation of restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, and anti-racist and equitable disciplinary policies.

Before joining us on January 21st, consider your responses to the following questions:
- What are the most essential questions for me to ask a school's hiring manager in order to determine cultural fit?
- What does it really mean for a school to have a "progressive" approach, nowadays?
- What is Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices and what are restorative schools looking for in candidates?
- What are the elements of being a trauma-informed school and what might my responsibilities include at such a school?
- How can schools be anti-racist in their curricula, instruction, hiring, and school discipline? What aspects of my experience can I highlight to demonstrate a commitment toward being an anti-racist educator?
- What is SEL and is it important? How do I determine whether a school is really committed to SEL and whole-child development?
