Walk in the Shoes of a Dyslexic
Event Information
Description
Presented by the Oregon Branch of the International Dyslexia Association
This interactive session will immerse you in the sights and sounds, and the tactile challenges of a student with dyslexia, through full audience participation in 6 separate activities. Everyone will play an active part in each of the learning scenarios: (a) auditory figure-ground, (b) mirror activity, (c) lines with bumps story, (d) non-dominant hand, (e) round robin reading, and (f) writing word choice. Following the introduction, the audience will be divided into groups and will rotate through the 6 activities. During the exercises, each person will experience the daily learning challenges facing students who learn differently. The simulation experience will reinforce the importance of understanding dyslexia and other learning differences, and why approaches to teaching must be modified when necessary at all levels in school, both regular and special education, from pre-K through university, to ensure student success. Following the exercises, participants will reflect on the experience, learn helpful strategies, and hear from our student panel on their stories of difficulties and hope.
