April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
• Every 98 seconds another person becomes a victim of sexual assault
• 1 in 6 American women report being sexually assaulted.
• 1 in 10 victims of sexual assault are male.
Silence plays a large part in why sexual violence persists. It is critical to open the communication channel about sexualized violence.
Unfortunately, sexual assault is a difficult topic to get people talking about. People do not want to think about this happening in our community. Most vicitms want to forget about it and not talk about it. A major problem in ending sexual violence is how do we get people talking? How can we let it be known that sexual assault is not accepatable in our community? How do we help these victims recover?
Walk a Mile in Their Shoes
We invite the community to come together to proclaim that sexual assault is NOT acceptable in our community. Also, help to ease the isolation and helplessness that survivors of sexual violence often feel be openly walking through Morgantown today in an event speaking out against sexual assault.
This year, the name of our annual walk as changed -- instead of asking men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes, we are asking everyone to particpate (in someone else's shoes would be wonderful, but is not required). The message of this event is an all-inclusive one: sexual assault affects individuals of all genders and walks of life.
Everyone is invited to participate in this walk, regardless of the type of shoes they wear, and to get involved in an issue that's really difficult to talk about: sexual violence.
*The $15.00 donation covers the cost of the T-shirts and associated fees. Additional donations can help RDVIC support and advocate for sexual assault vicitms and can be made online through the donation button on RDVIC's website, or directly to RDVIC (call 304-292-5100 for details).
Thank you for your support!
