Event description
Explore this native woodland with native plant specialists to discover the spring ephemerals of Central Indiana.

About this Event

In 2019 the Indiana Native Plant Society released "Wake Up Woods". It is a children book that delights adults as well illustrating the spring ephemerals of Indiana. Here's what Indiana State Library said about the book after it won a national award: “Wake Up, Woods” pairs informational text with clever verses to inform and delight the reader about plants native to North American forests. “Wake Up, Woods” is not only written and illustrated by Hoosiers, but each of the plants highlighted in the book are native to Indiana and can be found in the spring time in parks and preserves – and even in shade gardens around yards."

During this woodland hike, Ben Hess, Senior Scientist at Cardno and Chandler Bryant, Director of Natural Resources at Newfields will highlight plants from the book in the woodland park at Newfields. These amazing spring ephemerals emerge in spring, leaf out, flower and fruit all in time to go dormant for for the rest of the year. They are a special kind of native perennial. If you would like to purchase the book before the hike, you can find it at Rubber Ducky Press, Barnes and Noble and Amazon and some Birds Unlimited stores.
