Description

June 13th: Disability Inclusivity in the Workplace

Join us for breakfast, as we hear from a panel of advocates how we can all consider not only our work environment, but other spaces, through a more inclusive lens. The panel will include Angie Vandersteen from Indianapolis-based disability partner, Tangram Business Resourcing; Brandi Hamilton, Director of Community Services for LifeDesigns; and Randy Paul, a longtime local community organizer and activist.

"One of the greatest barriers to employment for people with disabilities is fear of the unknown on the part of employers. Common fears include:

  • Fear of how other employees and customers will be accepting to people with disabilities
  • Fear of how to supervise someone with a disability
  • Fear of safety concerns in the workplace
  • Fear of communicating with someone with a disability
  • Fear of what happens if it doesn’t work out

These fears are real, especially for those that have no or very little interaction with disabilities. People with disabilities want to be treated like anyone else and they want a career not just a job. People with disabilities are still stigmatized with low expectations, and have a 2x higher unemployment rate compared to their peers without a disability. By addressing fears and stigmas, we begin to see the person and not their disability."

- excerpt from panelist Angie Vandersteen from Indianapolis-based disability partner, Tangram Business Resourcing.

Series information:

Join us the second Thursday each month for breakfast, networking, and an enlightening presentation and discussion of timely topics. Alongside friends, neighbors, nonprofits and community partners, learn more about issues that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area: homelessness; the intersection of housing and poverty; raising children in the 21st century; and disabilities in the workplace, among others. You’ll have the opportunity to deepen your awareness about someone else's reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations, and resources available through area nonprofits.

Your $10 ticket will cover the cost of breakfast, with remaining proceeds supporting United Way of Monroe County's efforts to address our community's critical needs today, while reducing those needs tomorrow.

Wake Up! with United Way is a collaborative project of United Way of Monroe County and Indiana University's Political and Civic Engagement Program, with thanks to Old National Bank for series support.
