JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN GET MARRIED DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD. BRADLEY JACOBS TALKS WITH ATTORNEY LIZ SCHWARTZ, AUTHOR OF ‘BEFORE I DO.’

On Tuesday, March 28, Out Professionals presents leading gay rights attorney Elizabeth F. Schwartz, author of “Before I Do: A Legal Guide to Marriage, Gay and Otherwise” (The New Press, New York and London). In conversation with Bradley Jacobs, Schwartz considers what our marriage rights may look like under this new administration. And what we can do to protect ourselves right now.

Schwartz spells out the range of practical considerations a couple needs to address before tying the knot — from name changes and getting a license, to taxes, insurance and Social Security. She lays out the rights marriage provides and those it does not.

Anyone in a relationship needs to read “Before I Do.” Using real-world examples, Liz takes you through estate planning, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and the organization of finances.

Schwartz’s new book carries a moving afterword by Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that made marriage equality the law of the land. Bradley Jacobs talked with Jim and his “Love Wins” co-author Debbie Cenziper at Out Professionals in June.

Elizabeth F. Schwartz is one of the nation’s best-known legal advocates for the LGBT community. Her law practice, Elizabeth F. Schwartz, PA, focuses on family formation (adoption, insemination, and surrogacy), divorce, estate planning, and probate. Liz is a fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys and the American Academy of Assisted Reproductive Technology Attorneys. She is a certified family mediator and a member of the Collaborative Family Law Institute,. She serves as co-chair of the national board of SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Liz and her wife, writer Lydia Martin, live in Miami’s urban core.

Bradley Jacobs (AKA BJ) is a journalist and content strategist specializing in LGBTQ topics, film and the parenting sphere.
