Beginning January 2019 employers are required to withhold premiums equal to approximately 0.252% of employee gross wages to provide a type of medical and short-term disability coverage for Washington state employees. Employers with greater than 50 employees will also be required to pay an employer premium.

This presentation includes:

  • What ministries need to know regarding the new Washington State Paid Family & Medical Leave Act (this requires all employers to begin withholding taxes from employees effective January 1, 2019)

    • This statewide insurance program starts with payroll withholding in 2019, and employees can take leave in 2020.

    • Workers can take paid leave to care for themselves or their family

    • Up to 12 weeks of leave are generally available, though up to 18 weeks could be allowed in some circumstances

    • Employers may choose to use a Voluntary Plan

    • An employer can elect to pay any or all of the employee's share of the premium.
