This Hematology session will provide an overview of the various pathologies that can be diagnosed by evaluation of blood films and complete blood count (CBC) data. Proper blood film preparation and microscopic examination will be discussed. Different types of anemias including those caused by immune-mediated destruction, infectious agents, and iron deficiency will be compared. Leukocytes will also be considered with a review of neutrophil toxicity and granulocytic Rickettsial infections. An interactive case-based session will follow with microscopic evaluation of blood films with discussion of the clinical significance of such findings, including the identification of hemotropic microorganisms, circulating neoplastic cells, and examples of immune-mediated destruction of erythrocytes and platelets.
