Event description
UNITY centers around coming together with the common goal of protecting the environment and combating climate change.

About this Event

In these isolating and uncertain times, it’s important that as a community, we can come together with the common goal of protecting the environment and combating climate change. While physically apart, we want to continue sharing ideas and taking joint action in the fight for better education, indigenous land rights, climate justice, and ecological preservation. Students will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of environmental issues and local sustainability initiatives, while engaging in meaningful activities and conversations with members of their community.

Workshop #3 (1:45 - 2:30 PM)

Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet: This interactive workshop will outline how transitioning to a plant-based diet can not only contribute positively towards the rights of farmed animals, but also improve personal health, the environment and therefore climate change. Participants will also learn how they can create change within their school community through our Plant-Based Plates program, which works with student groups to support efforts in introducing more healthy, humane and sustainable plant-based options on cafeteria menus.

Putting Sustainability on the Map in Metro Vancouver and Beyond: In this fun and interactive session, we will introduce and explore unique strategies to make learning and leadership for sustainability real, relevant, action-oriented and fun! Explore personal and local connections to water, waste, wastewater, air quality and climate change. Delve into a variety of place-based resources and strategies to promote CARE, leadership, environmental responsibility and action in your Metro Vancouver school and community! Take away ideas, strategies, tools and inspiration to engage others in experiential learning about the most important topic on earth and our region!

A Step in the Decarbonized Direction imagines a day in a decarbonized life. Where does it start? What does it look like? What changes occur in our life and those around us when we become fossil fuel free? Students will map out the carbon picked up as they move along their day, and work out what would happen if they decided not to pick it up. At day's end, we’ll be able to imagine the consequences of a decarbonized life.

It's 'Cool' To Be Sustainable! Fashion Brands & You: What does fast fashion have to do with climate change? Plenty! Fashion contributes to 20% of the global carbon emissions, it is one of the biggest water polluters, and one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled every second* (Fashion Revolution). So, join us for an empowering session where you can learn the tools necessary to shape the fashion industry into one that is more sustainable - one that puts the people & the planet first. Are you ready to disrupt the system? We'll give you everything you need to be the most stylish climate activist on the block...because fast-fashion is SO last year.

Change Starts With YOUth: In this workshop, learn how you can lead your own team and create meaningful change. Explore different youth grants, learn about the VSBSC Student Scholarship, and discover different ways to take action. From finding your passion to executing your plan, the VSBSC team will tell you everything you need to know about starting your initiative through an interactive presentation and discussion.
