Description

The 2017 Alan M. and Nathalie P. Voorhees Lecture on the History of Cartography features guest speakers Marianne M. McKee on “From Survey to Settlement: Maps of the City of Richmond, Virginia,” Lyle Browning on “LVA Maps & Archaeology: The Lost, the Forgotten, and the Misbegotten,” and Leslie Courtois on “Conservation of Richard Young’s Manuscript Maps of Richmond,” along with an exhibition of Richmond-related maps from the Library’s collections. While the lectures do not begin until 1:00 pm, there are several other activities offered including Map Appraisals by Old World Auctions, and tours of Special Collections (reservations required). Box lunches are offered for advanced purchase only. The Virginia Shop will be open 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.

THE FRY-JEFFERSON MAP SOCIETY HOSTS THIS FREE ANNUAL LECTURE SERIES.

Exhibition of Richmond Maps | 10:00 am–4:00 pm

Map Appraisals by Old World Auctions | 10:00 am–Noon

Experts from Old World Auctions, specialists in antique maps from the 15th through 19th centuries, will provide free map evaluations, including information on authenticity, an estimate of value, and an assessment of condition. Old World Auctions will provide verbal evaluations, not written appraisals. Due to time constraints, participants are limited to one map evaluation each.

Tours of Special Collections | 10:15 am & 11:15 am

Visit the Special Collections Reading Room for a presentation of materials related to Virginia’s capital city. Two tours will be offered; however registration is required.
