Volunteering Untapped celebrates its third birthday in February 2017. We've learned a lot these past three years: how passionate Baltimore millennials are about giving back to their city, how many organizations are truly in need of help, and how much work still remains. We're hoping to host an event that will help us in "untapping potential" and continuing the momentum we've gained so far in impacting Baltimore through increased volunteerism.
For our February event, we've decided to host the biggest event in our organization's history. We'll be hosting our first-ever summit that will include some of the top social influencers in Baltimore. The purpose of this summit is to inspire, engage, and ultimately help volunteers take the next step in driving positive change in our community.
WHO: We're hoping to have 500 volunteers attend this event. Come, bring your friends, tell your colleagues, and spread the word!
We're thrilled to announce that Congressman Elijah Cummings will be the keynote speaker for the event! A lifelong Baltimore resident - and VU supporter - Cummings is a 10-term Congressman, serving Baltimore since 1996, and currently serves as the Ranking Member of the Committee of Oversight and Reform.
We're still securing additional speakers, but we already have several major social influencers committed to speak, including:
Fagan Harris - Founder and CEO of Baltimore Corps, an organization that seeks to significantly improve the effectiveness of Baltimore's social impact sector through placing the most talented people in roles where they work on solving Baltimore's most important challenges.
Chris Wilson - Founder and CEO of Barclay Investment Corporation, a contracting social enterprise that employs those whose personal background present significant challenges to finding work elsewhere.
Siddhi Sundar - Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Hero Lab, which improves education outcomes and cultivates grit and purpose for at-risk children in Baltimore and in Mumbai, India.
Rodney Foxworth - Founder and CEO of Invested Impact, an enterpise that partners with visionary and social change investors to identify, cultivate and fund emerging leaders and transformative ideas.
Celia Neustadt - Founder and Executive Director of The Inner Harbor Project, a model for social change that identifies teenagers who are leaders among their peers, equips them with research and professional skills, and organizes them to come up with solutions to issues that divide our society on the basis of race, class and culture.
Sarah Hemminger - Co-Founder and CEO of Thread, a dynamic organization that engages underperforming high school students confronting significant barriers outside of the classroom by providing each one with a family of committed volunteers and increased access to community resources to foster students' academic advnacement and personal growth into self-motivated, resilient, and responsible citizens.
WHAT: The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm. The conference portion will be from 10 am to 1 pm and will have speeches and panel discussions featuring Baltimore's top social influencers, thinkers and doers who are leading the organizations doing the most groundbreaking and impactful work in Baltimore. Topics will include education, poverty, volunteerism and much more. Breaking up the speakers will be fun activities, music, etc.
After the conference portion, we'll be hosting a "Charity Tinder" that will feature more than 30 of the top nonprofit organizations in Baltimore, who will be able to tell volunteers about their organizations and how they're impacting the community. The hope is that volunteers will be able to "match" with more about organizations that align closely with issues they're passionate about.
And, since it's us, there will (of course) be FREE BOOZE. There will also be food tents and/or pop-up food stands offering food for sale inside the event.
WHERE: The event will take place at the Columbus Center at Pier 5 in at 701 E. Pratt St. Baltimore
WHEN: Saturday, February 11, 2017. The main event will run from 10 am to 1 pm. The Charity Tinder portion will run from 1 to 4 pm.
WHY: This event was created to help volunteers take the next step in becoming active in helping to shape and better their communities. Plus, we love birthday parties.
Much more information to come. Sign up, spread the word, and follow your emails and our social channels as we secure more speakers and have more details around the day's activities.
