Event description

Description

Believed to be the first forest garden on publicly-accessible natural lands in Pennsylvania, the Falmouth Forest Garden is a restored, five-acre floodplain forest within the Conoy Wetlands Nature Preserve that is designed to provide long-lived perennial crops such as black walnuts, persimmons, pawpaws, serviceberries, and hazelnuts for improved wildlife habitat and a unique visitors’ experience. With the (re)introduction of 20 native, crop-producing species and a supporting groundcover of native herbs and wildflowers, the forest garden serves as a demonstration of regenerative agroforestry as a public-natural lands management strategy along the Northwest River Trail.

Join us to help care for this burgeoning project! We will prune back invasive plants in and around the Forest Garden. We will also pull weeds, spread woodchips, and work to further enhance this exciting project.

Additional Details:

Participants should be prepared to work in an open field, unprotected from the sun, using manual tools. Personal sun protection is suggested, along with long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. The Conservancy will provide gloves and tools, as well as water and light snacks. Due to logistic challenges at this site, we must insist that all participants register through Eventbrite. *The Conservancy reserves the right to turn away any unregistered participants. Parking and a portajohn are nearby, at the Falmouth Boat Launch. From the parking area, take the Northwest River Trail south for about 6 minutes, where you enter the Falmouth Forest Garden Project Area.
