Event description

Description

Spend a few hours with the NYC Compost Project hosted by Queens Botanical Garden! Learn how compost can be made from food scraps and how compost is used to nourish the soil to grow healthy food in NYC.

Takes place every Wednesday and last Saturday of each month, May 2 through October 31, 9am to 12pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. For individual sign-up only.

Farm tasks will vary by day, but may include weeding, harvesting, planting, and composting activities. Compost workdays will involve making a fresh batch of compost with wood chips, leaves and food scraps, sifting finished compost, or applying compost at QBG!

Please read through the list below for important details about volunteering with the NYC Compost Project hosted by Queens Botanical Garden.

• Work on the Farm & Compost site necessitates an ability to perform diverse, sometimes repetitive, tasks that can be physically demanding.

• You must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer. Volunteers under 18 are required to have a guardian sign a liability waiver in advance of workday. Please email us if you are under 18 at compost@queensbotanical.org.

• Sign up for shifts is first come, first served, and open on a monthly basis. Volunteer days will be posted a month in advance. For example, if you want to attend an August work day, check the sign-up sheet in July.

• Space is limited. Please let us know if you cannot attend a workday as soon as possible, and no later than 7 days before the workday, so someone else may take your spot.

• You will receive a confirmation email noting the days for which you have registered and before each workday.

Admission and Parking is free on all days you volunteer.
