Event description

Description

Become a volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, which are taught as part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12th grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects.

You need no experience or training to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach to engage and encourage students as they work on their projects.

The classroom workshops below need your support in Harlem. To sign up to volunteer, please reply with the program code and date(s) you chose to volunteer@behindthebook.org:

Overview: This fourth-grade Special Education class is reading Jessie Hartland’s book How the Meteor Got to the Museum, the amazing story of how a billion-year-old rock from outer space ends up in the American Museum of Natural History. Students will write about different jobs at the museum , which they’ll visit to do research, interview staff members, and ultimately create a mural to enliven their writing. For a final project, they’ll act as docents and explain their findings to their families and school staff.

Please visit our volunteer opportunities page for more workshop dates around New York City. Join our team to receive announcements of new classroom programs by completing our brief questionnaire.
