Join us for a work weekend at the beautiful IROEC inside Irvine Regional Park. We will be preparing soil for planting, and creating new growing areas. The IROEC's objective is to grow enough produce to feed its student campers and to raise funds for its programs by selling any excess to chefs and at farmers' markets. Experienced gardeners and novices alike are encouraged to participate!
You are welcome to come for the weekend or part or all of Saturday. Bring close-toed work shoes, work gloves, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and gardening tools such as 5-gallon buckets and shovels.
Kids age 8 and up are welcome to come and work with us as Saturday volunteers; however, they should be supervised at all times. No pets.
Meals and Accommodations:
Pack a sack lunch for Saturday. Dinner Saturday evening will be a shared potluck. Bring a dish to share, your own place setting, plates, cutlery, napkins and drinking glasses. Water and iced tea will be provided at meals; please bring any other beverages you wish to enjoy.
If you will be sleeping over Saturday night, bring a sleeping bag or linens, pillow, towel and toiletry items. If you take any medications, don't forget to bring them! We will be staying in a very nice bunkhouse that has shower and bathroom facilities.
Breakfast will be provided on Sunday for those who are staying over.
About the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center:
The OEC is an outdoor education camp for Orange County students, primarily in grades 4 through 6. While at the camp, children learn how to grow food, care for the soil, and conserve water, as well as learning about native plants, bees and beekeeping, and more.
The OEC includes a citrus orchard with several varieties of exotic citrus, an edible garden demonstrating a variety of growing techniques for backyard growers, beehives, a budding Mediterranean food forest, developing pollinator gardens, and a bioswale for water management. It was the recipient of our first 2014 Slow Food microgrant. More info can be found at the IROEC website.
