Volunteer at the food bank with fellow Chicago Atheists!
Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (CST)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Atheists and allies, old friends and new, are invited to join our community's second annual volunteer day at the Greater Chicagoland Food Depository!
We will be packing food shipments to send out to soup kitchens all over Chicagoland, just in time for Thanksgiving. Big companies send bulk containers of food like oranges or pasta to the food bank. Volunteers are needed to sort out the spoiled food and then repack the good food into smaller family size amounts.
We hope to go out again for socializing and food when our shift ends at 12pm noon. All are welcome! Anyone unable to make it to the morning volunteering is still welcome to join us at the restaurant. (Restaurant: TBA, suggestions welcome)
Last year's volunteer day was a lot of fun! And more importantly, we packed up 18,522 lbs of good fruit! (pallets on the floor in photo below)
Here are details volunteers need to know:
Please show up ~15 minutes early, around 8:45 am.
Do we need to bring anything to our volunteer session?
We ask that each volunteer bring at least one nonperishable food item.
Priority items include: cereal (cold and hot), canned vegetables, soup, stew, tuna, canned fruit, rice, beans, pasta, pasta sauce, shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese.
What should I wear?
Volunteers must wear long pants and close-toed shoes. You will not be permitted to work in the warehouse if you are wearing sandals or shorts/ short skirt. Depending on the project you are assigned to, you may be asked to remove jewelry above the waist (including piercings, but rings are acceptable).
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Volunteers need to be 14 years old to volunteer at the Food Depository during regular sessions.
Will we be required to lift heavy objects?
Repack volunteers are not required to do heavy lifting, but should be prepared to stand for 90 minutes at a time with some light lifting and bending, depending on the project.
There is non-metered (free), non-permit street parking surrounding the building. Please park on side streets, Karlov and Keeler, for morning and afternoon sessions. Our parking lot will be available for Wednesday evening and Saturday sessions.
This is a great event for isolated Atheists to find a friendly community. Several people showed up alone last year and said that was their first time meeting another Atheist.
Come join us. :-)
