Void of Mercy: A Conversation About Marie Deans and Her Fight Against the D...

The life of Marie Deans, a champion of the fight against the dealth penalty, will be the focus of the panel discussion held this March at American University. "Void of Mercy" will shed light on the three decades of work that earned Deans the moniker "Angel of Death Row."

About the panelists:
Dr. Todd Peppers is a professor of Political Science at Roanoke College. He has written three previous books on law clerks and death row, and in his research has a specific interest in judicial institutions, legal history, and capital punishment. His writings have been featured in countless Law Reviews and Journals. Dr. Peppers worked with her to write this biography, which continued after her death.
Margaret Anderson was a student of Dr. Peppers and is now a graduate student at the University of Virginia earning a Masters in Public Policy. She previously worked as a Legislative Correspondent and Staff Assistant for Senator Mark Warner and is currently a Fellow at the UVA Center for Social Entrepreneurship. Margaret was the co-author and Research Assistant on this project.
Reverend Joseph Ingle has been a prominent advocate against the death penalty since 1973. He served as a chaplain for Southern prisons and death rows and worked closely with Marie Deans throughout her life. He is a two time Nobel Prize nominee and author of Last Rights: Thirteen Fatal Encounters with the State’s Justice. Reverend Ingle is the former director of the Southern Coalition on Jails and Prisons, founder of the Tennessee Committee against State Killing, and has served most recently as the Executive Director of the Nashville-based Neighborhood Justice Center, an alternative conflict management center dedicated to restorative justice.
Denise Lunsford is a Virginia attorney who knew Marie Deans during the last decade of her life. Denise worked with Marie doing mitigation work, and Denise helped care for Marie during the final months of her life. Denise currently practices law at Denise Y. Lunsford, LLC, focusing on criminal defense and family, business and employment law.
