Doors open at 6:30pm
Come hear rare stories from witnesses and survivors of the 1947 Partition, recognized as the world's largest mass refugee crisis. Nearly 2 million died in the communal violence that accompanied Partition, and up to 25 million were uprooted through the 1950's, or 1% of the world's population at the time.
Join us as we explore the 1947 Partition through a special screening of interview footage followed by witnesses sharing their stories.
Mr. Mohanbir Singh Rekhi
Mrs. Jaya Mehta
Mr. Iftekhar Hai
Story Scholar Sobia Saleem
Dr. Priya Satia (Department of History, Stanford University)
With talks by:
Tricia Wynne, Board Chair of California Humanities
Dr. Guneeta Singh Bhalla, Founder and Director of The 1947 Partition Archive
Elaine Jones, Outreach Coordinator of The 1947 Partition Archive

When & Where
The 1947 Partition Archive
The 1947 Partition Archive gives voice to those who witnessed the Partition of South Asia in 1947, an event that is as significant as the Holocaust in Europe and the World Wars, but has attracted little documentation. So far, over 500 volunteers have helped preserve nearly 2000 stories on digital video. There is a great urgency for us to carry out the work as fast as possible since those who remember Partition are now in their 80’s, 90’s and beyond.
