Voices from Chernobyl

Dir. Pol Cruchten | Luxembourg | 2016 | 86 mins

Based on the book by Svetlana Alexievich – winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize for Literature, this stunning piece of cinema does not deal with the Chernobyl nuclear incident per se but rather with the world of Chernobyl, about which the public actually knows very little. Drawing inspiration from filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, Cruchten takes the audience on a spiritual and poetic journey through this horror, overlaying images of immaculate composition with the devastating testimony of scientists, teachers, journalists, families and children who suffered through the tragedy – giving them the chance to speak about their daily lives, forever shattered by nuclear disaster. Their voices become a long supplication. A rare visual experience, the film adroitly reflects on the atrocities suffered by the victims of this accident and with images of mesmerizing beauty, invites us to take a glimpse deep into the human soul.

Bonus Australian Short: They Come Home
