Visual Development, Deficiencies, and the Role of Vision Therapy in OT

In our seminar, we will explore the role of visual development in occupational therapy, how to identify visual deficiencies in the therapy room, and when to refer clients for vision therapy. Case examples and practical documentation strategies will help OTs apply concepts directly to practice.

Objectives:

1. Define at least five developmental visual functions (e.g., acuity, accommodation, vergence, ocular motility, visual processing) and state how each can affect occupation (ADLs/IADLs, school, work).

2. Identify a minimum of four red flags for visual dysfunction observable in the therapy room and match each to an appropriate OT action (environmental adaptation, screening, activity modification, referral).

3. Document one client scenario using OT-appropriate language that differentiates screening from diagnosis and outlines a referral pathway to an eye-care professional/vision therapy provider.
