Inventive Methods for Fulling Resist
Jean Cacicedo + Yoshiko I. Wada
Saturday - Sunday, August 25 - 26 | 9:30am - 4:30pm
Slow Fiber Studios Annex | 1825 Eighth St, Berkeley, CA 94710
$300 | Materials Fee Included | Materials List

Create textiles with surprising and inventive textural contrast through the use of an unusual historical European technique shared by Joy Boutrup and mastered by Jean Cacicedo. We’ll create a resist on specially designed wool gauze by applying paste through stencils or hand-painting before agitating the cloth to full its unprotected areas. By understanding the cloth’s physical and chemical structures, we can use resist paste over cloth shaped by shibori to achieve lacelike effects with delicate textures, playing with the translucency and hand of the cloth. Yoshiko and Jean will provide recipes, a compendium of simple yet technical information on the processes, and an overview of inspiring and innovative work using this technique.

Registration includes 60 cm x 200 cm of white or grey fulling wool; purchase extra on the Slow Fiber Studios Shop.

WORKSHOP 1

Unexpected Applications for Shaped Resist on Wool
Jean Cacicedo + Yoshiko I. Wada
Saturday - Sunday, February 10 - 11 | 9:30am - 4:30pm
Slow Fiber Studios Annex | 1825 Eighth St, Berkeley, CA 94710
$300 | Materials Fee Included | Materials List

For millennia, people have created practical warm garments using the process of felting (raw fleece) or fulling (woven cloth), agitating wool fibers until their microscopic scales “catch” each other, matting and shrinking into a denser material. We will apply modern techniques and design aesthetics to this ancient method, exploring wool’s shrinking characteristics through shibori techniques and quilting processes. Students will play with various forms of wool including fleece, yarns, and fine wool gauze, combining them with contrasting materials such as silk, polyester, and cotton to achieve unexpected surfaces and shapes. Additionally, students will learn how to effectively dye with indigo on delicate wool by controlling pH and temperature to achieve varying intensities of blue on wool, plant fiber, and silk.

Registration includes 2 meters of white or grey fulling wool; purchase extra on the Slow Fiber Studios Shop.

Indigo dye vats will be available for the participants to enrich their own projects.
