Event description

Description

Syracuse’s Downtown neighborhood invites you to join us for this event and learn more about the Empire State Trail, Creekwalk Phase II, and other Urban Trail projects in the city and how communities can get involved in shaping and sharing the benefits.

Our speaker is Jeff Olson, a designer and principal at Alta Planning. Jeff will share his experience planning, designing and writing about greenways, open space, active living, and alternative mobility projects. Jeff has recently been involved in planning the Empire State trail and its connection through Syracuse. According to Jeff, Syracuse is the only major city that has the trail passing directly through it. Let’s take advantage of that!

The Visioning Voices Speaker Series events are open to those who want to learn how to make positive change in their neighborhood. We encourage community members, neighborhood organizations and businesses city-wide to participate in this event and take lessons learned back to your community. Each event consists of a series of activities to familiarize participants with the host neighborhood and learn about the factors in our built and natural environments that affect our health and quality of life.

Register for the activities that work best with your schedule

• 2:15 to 3:30 pm - A walking tour of the Downtown neighborhood including the proposed route of the Empire State Trail where we will explore existing streets, buildings and businesses as examples of supportive design as well as areas of opportunity for new growth and development.

• 4:00 to 5:15 pm - An illustrated presentation by our guest speaker Jeff Olson, who will share his experience working on the Empire State Trail planning and design process and introduce strategies communities have used to mobilize urban trails for creating healthy neighborhoods, downtowns and local economies.

5:30 to 6:00 pm - A community dinner during which you can meet and talk with people interested in this topic and building connections.

6:00 to 7:30 pm - The hands-on workshop will provide facilitated activities to practice and apply ideas introduced in the presentation, that you can take back to your community.
