Event description

Description

To ensure consumer protection is maintained, and enhanced in areas of weakness, whatever the outcomes of Brexit negotiations

NCF Consumer Congress will address the consumer issues that have been identified over the past year and propose actions to improve consumer protection from opportunities arising from Brexit.

There are financial constraints in delivering effective consumer protection and minimising detriment and, therefore, Congress will seek to vision innovative, affordable ways to meet these objectives.

During the past year government, business, consumer and other organisations have identified the many and complex issues and opportunities we face as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. In particular, we note the House of Lords Report “Brexit: will consumers be protected?[1]. NCF Consumer Congress has delivered two reports, “The Best of Brexit for Consumers[” and “Brexit: Transposition of Laws – What’s the point if Enforcement is weak". In addition, a Consumer Green Paper is expected to be published by the time Congress meets[2].

Now it’s time to develop a consumer vision of the future. Statements from leading politicians recognise the importance of the consumer as we leave the EU. Consumers are a vital stakeholder in the economy accounting for 66% of the economy through household expenditure. NCF Consumer Congress allows consumers to bring our vision of what good looks like to government.
