The visionary experience is a fundamental aspect of reality and the human mind. Henri Corbin referred to this as the mundus imaginalis; the theosophers of Islam designated this psychogeography as the “eighth clime”; the entire third book of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras focuses upon this practical, imaginal faculty.

History and memory frame our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. But sometimes novelty and surprise burst through, triggering extraordinary experiences that don't fit neatly into any previous understanding. Sometimes these visionary experiences resonate with religious or mythological worlds; sometimes they are singular. Sometimes such raptures are inspired by substances, and their intensity depends upon the dosage of the poison (Paracelsus) coupled the set and setting. Other times these openings are invoked by ourselves in our own bodies. Still other times they happen of their own accord. How do we make sense of these extraordinary experiences?

Conversations and practicums with liminal dream expert Jennifer Dumpert, author Erik Davis, and LAYC/Ardor founders Spiros Antonopoulos and Erica Morton Magill. All are deep explorers of the liminal, longtime practitioners of contemplative practice traditions, and students of the farther reaches of mind. Musician Fletcher Tucker will also provide some mythopoetic sounds.

Jennifer Dumpert is a San Francisco-based writer and lecturer. She is the author of Liminal Dreaming: Exploring Consciousness at the Edges of Sleep, due for publication in May 2019. She is the founder of the Oneironauticum, an international organization that explores the phenomenological experience of dreams as a means of experimenting with mind. She also teaches the practice of Liminal Dreaming—surfing the edges of consciousness using hypnagogic and hypnopompic dream states.

Erik Davis is an author, podcaster, award-winning journalist, and lecturer based in San Francisco. His wide-ranging work focuses on the intersection of alternative religion, media, and the popular imagination. He is the author, most recently, of Nomad Codes: Adventures in Modern Esoterica. He also wrote The Visionary State: A Journey through California’s Spiritual Landscape, a short critical volume on Led Zeppelin, and the cult book TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information. His work has been translated into a dozen languages.

Fletcher Tucker is a multi-disciplinary, animistic artist and musician hailing from Big Sur, California. Using very old acoustic instruments (pump organ, bells, dulcimer, guitar, rattles, etc.) Fletcher will construct a ceremonial environment of song and sound – an art ritual comprised of atavistic drones, mythopoetic pagan invocations, and sonic offerings to the (largely) abandoned gods of place.

Spiro and Erica are the founders of Ardor Apothecary and Los Angeles Yoga Club. Together they explore the interstices of consciousness by curating conversation and cultivating community in their sacred gathering space in downtown Los Angeles.

“I know of no other Christianity and of no other Gospel than the liberty both of body and mind to exercise the Divine Arts of Imagination."
"Imagination is the real and eternal world of which this vegetable universe is but a faint shadow."
—Wm. Blake
