Description

The 'Visible Thinking (VT) in the Mauritshuis' workshop is a special edition of our hugely popular international course for museum educators, guides, teachers, parents and others interested in learning how to create lively discussions about art and museum objects. Participants can choose to take either a one day or a two day workshop. The workshop is facilitated by experienced museum educators, Claire Bown and Gundy van Dijk.

We are delighted to hold this workshop in the beautiful setting of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The museum is located right in the historical centre, next to the Binnenhof and houses a first-rate collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings from the Golden Age. The collection contains masterpieces such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt and The Goldfinch by Fabritius.

Since 2011 we have trained over 450 people from more than 20 countries in our 4-step method of using 'Visible Thinking in the Museum' to create group discussions using art and museum objects.
Our workshops teach people to use select elements of VT with museum education practices to make sense of art and museum objects in a memorable and engaging way.

DAY 1 INTRODUCTION TO USING VISIBLE THINKING IN THE MUSEUM

We will spend the day at the Mauritshuis where participants will gain an understanding of several thinking routines through activities and discussions. We will also show how different types of routines can be used to focus on certain types of thinking with different works of art. This will be followed by an afternoon in the galleries to practise the art of facilitating group discussion using art and museum objects.

Day 1 of the 'Visible Thinking in the Museum' Workshop is open to all and no prior experience is required to participate.

DAY 2 DIGGER DEEPER WITH VISIBLE THINKING IN THE MUSEUM

The ‘Digger Deeper’ workshop is intended for those who have already completed a training or workshop with us (for example, day 1 above or an in-house training) or for those who have been working with Visible Thinking for some time. Contact us to find out more.

This workshop builds on tools and skills covered in our ‘Introduction to Using VT in the Museum’ workshop. We will start the day at the Mauritshuis exploring how thinking routines can be used in different ways to develop coherent story lines. We will also pay attention to object/artwork selection so that participants will be able to easily select thinking routines for use with a variety of artworks or museum objects with a variety of age groups. In the afternoon further opportunities will be provided to hone facilitation skills through exercises at the Stedelijk Museum and to explore what it means to create a culture of thinking.
