We start our vis-à-vis learning journey in Amsterdam at the Rijksmuseum and Rembrandthuis and travel to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris to experience how new stories of paintings by old masters can support understanding the current discussions on racism and can lead to co-creating transformational stories for better future. From Paris we are going to travel to Boston to see a unique surprising piece of art that has not been painted...
Our storytelling framework is STORYTELLING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
In the session SKIN COLOR we are going to have a look at artworks by old masters and contemporary artists and focus on the following questions:
- What stories should we stop telling?
- What stories should we keep telling?
- What stories should we start telling?
- What can we do to re-narrate worn-off stories and raise voice against racism and xenophobia?
March, 17th 2021, 17:00-19:00 CET
We start our vis-à-vis learning journey at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, to dive into the story of the Tower of Babel by Breughel the Elder. Babel (Hebrew מִגְדַּל בָּבֶל, Migdal Bavel) in Genesis 11:1–9 symbolizes the globalized world with its multilingual inhabitants. It gives us an explanation of why people struggle with communication in different languages. Sensibilized to the different languages, we are going to fly to Abu Dhabi to experience an amazing piece of art that can be visited from inside out... and have a look at the newest language of the globalized world - emoticons. And eventually, we are going to land in Kuala Lumpur to see how words create worlds...
In the session BABEL we are going to have a look at artworks from around the world and focus on the following questions:
- What are the challenges and chances of multilingualism?
- What are the best practices to acknowledge & profit from the diversity of languages in the intercultural contexts?
- What are the stories regarding multilingualism "depicting the world of obviousness" in different corners of the world?
- How do words create worlds and what it means for cultural, gender, social and age diversity?

We start our vis-à-vis learning journey in Tokyo, Japan travel to Paris and Giverny, France to end our virtual session in Doha, Qatar. Al qantara stands in Arabic for a bridge and the focus of our travelling is building bridges of understanding across cultures. In this learning journey we focus on working with visual arts as sources of inspiration to create inclusive spaces where exchange of stories and self-reflection on our own and other people's multicultural identities are invited.
In the session AL QANTARA we are going to work with a powerful metaphor of the bridge. have a look at different artworks around the world as the starting point of conversations and focus on the following questions:
- How can we enhance intercultural sensitivity and development of our own skills to thrive in the complex and uncertain times?
- How can we bridge cultures and deepen cultural understanding to create more diverse and inclusive spaces?
- How can we use metaphors to enhance understanding of multicultural identities and focus on chances and enrichment of the mosaic of cultural influences?
