Event description
Young Writers’ Camp is an 8-day virtual summer program designed to inspire creative thinking and promote a love of writing.

About this event

Young Writers’ Camp is an 8-day virtual summer program designed to inspire creative thinking and promote a love of writing. Campers will experiment with different genres of writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.

YWC will be located online using a UCSD-secured Zoom platform. Every morning, campers will be emailed a Google Document that will include the agenda with links to curriculum and resources. Groups will meet each morning between 8:30am - 11:30am. There will be daily writing, feedback, and ways to connect with peers. Parent support and involvement will be required.*

Young writers will:

  • build their self-confidence and fluency as writers
  • receive individual attention in small groups from SDAWP writing teachers
  • write in a community environment designed to inspire creativity
  • engage in process writing—drafting, writing, revising, and editing
  • write and share with other young writers

All Young Writers will need: their own E-mail and an internet-connected device (with parent involvement on the first day for device set-up). Suggested devices: laptop or desktop computer, iPad or tablet, Chrome Book.

*Please note: Because of the online format of this workshop, we strongly encourage participants who are enthusiastic and engaged writers.

Cost is $350. Eventbrite service fees included. No refunds at any time. Payment and registration are done for one writer at a time. If you are registering siblings, please complete the process once per child.

What is a class/group? Camp will consist of up to 24 students per class grouped by grade level and facilitated by two to three SDAWP writing teachers.

What will a typical virtual day look like? Days will vary based on the activities planned. The following time frame is an example:

8:30-9:30   Lesson/activity and writing as a community

9:30-10:00   Breakout sessions/writing response groups

10:00-10:15   Break

10:15-10:30   Mini-lesson/Revision Strategy

10:30-11:00   Writing time

11:00-11:30   Sharing/Closing activity

What platforms are going to be used? We will be using UCSD-secured Zoom and Google Docs (Google account required). Personal email may be used during the program.

What materials will I need? You will need a device with stable access to the internet. We recommend: laptop, Chromebook, desktop computer, iPad -- smart phones are not suitable for this program.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions? sdawp@ucsd.edu • http://sdawp.ucsd.edu/

Registration Deadline Registration deadline is June 28. Minimum enrollment must be met to offer this program.

What is the refund policy? Please make sure your camper can participate from July 6-15 (8 days total, 8:30am-11:30am), as there are no refunds at any time.

Note to parents:This camp requires that participants have access to Google Docs. Please make sure your child has either a Google Account or a Gmail address before registering. This will ensure your child will have access to all the resources and material for the camp.

To find out if your child’s email is already linked to a Google Account:

  1. Visit the Google Accounts password change page. (https://accounts.google.com/signin/usernamerecovery)
  2. Enter any email address you think you might've used to create a Google Account.
  3. If Google does not recognize it, you'll immediately see a message. Below the message, you'll see a link to create a Google Account using that email address.

If your child doesn't have a Google Account but does have an email address already, you can create a Google account for them using that email address. If your child doesn't have an email address, you can create one with Gmail, at https://accounts.google.com/SignUp.

If at the end of camp you want to delete the account:

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com.
  2. At the left, click Data and personalization.
  3. Scroll to "Download, delete, or make a plan for your data."
  4. Click Delete a service or your account.
