Description

Virtual Internship: Cybersecurity (Fall 2018)

You are invited to participate in a class that is a virtual internship in cybersecurity and an opportunity to acquire real-world work experience as a cyber intern.

This course is offered as part of a unique education-industry collaboration between Queens College and the Cybersecurity Workforce Alliance (CWA) that does not require a technical or comp sci background and is geared specifically toward all students, regardless of their major.

There is an acute shortage of workforce ready, entry-level, cyber professionals, in the U.S. and Worldwide. In response to this shortage, key industry leaders launched the CWA to meet current and future industry demand for cybersecurity talent, with the goal of producing graduates who are workforce-ready. The industry is looking for students specifically with critical thinking and analytical skills, common to liberal arts and business-related majors.

Since 2015, close to 800 college students in New York have completed the CWA virtual cyber internship, including more than 75 Queens College students. The CWA student alumni are now pursuing careers in cyber at major banks, consulting firms, government agencies in New York or have a second internship in cyber.

In this course, student interns work in teams with industry mentors, faculty, and teaching assistants (TAs) using an online technology platform, iQ4. The course goal is to enable students to identify and analyze the depth and breadth of the cybersecurity challenges from multiple disciplines. In other words, depending on his/her background, students will focus on interrelated dimensions, including technical, procedural, legal, behavioural, skills/proficiencies to develop solutions and desired outcomes related to cyber threats and challenges. There are no lectures or exams, just student teams pursuing real-world case studies developed by cyber SMEs.

The industry mentors are volunteers, cyber SMEs. The Queens College mentors have included cyber, risk and information security execs and alumni from Price Waterhouse, Citizens Bank, Lazard, Arthur Anderson, etc. The student teams present their weekly assignments via video conference call to the mentors, who guide and counsel the teams with real-world knowledge transfer to the students.

This is a non-credit course, open to all students.

In addition to the two hours of meeting (either in person or virtually) with the mentors and the team, students are expected to spend up to 4 hours working on assignments with their team every week. The time commitment is equivalent to a full credit class.

This is a great opportunity to acquire real-world work experience in a field that desperately needs entry-level professionals like you. The industry is looking for students from all majors who possess analytical skills, creativity and/or agility. This virtual internship will position you to pursue additional internships in cyber/risk or a career in cyber/risk.

Here are some actual quotes from Queens College students, who have taken this course:

  • “The ability to hear what the professionals had to say.”

  • “Learn a lot about pressing matter and working in groups”
  • “Meeting people in the work field who shares their experience and make us think a way around the solution.

  • “Great way to meet other students and learn about cybersecurity.”

  • “Teaches real-world skills”
