The Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley invites you to the 3rd Annual Health Equity Summit on October 27, 2020 at 9:00am with a focus on systemic challenges faced by communities of color. This year’s event will address the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, colorism within the Hispanic Community, and systemic racism in education.
Presentations
Understanding Colorism within the Hispanic Community
Dr. Griselda Rodriguez-Solomon, PhD., City University of New York
This session will discuss colorism and the internalized racism in the LatinX community, by providing an overview of the history of colonialism and the internalized anti-black sentiments that are prevalent in the LatinX community. This session will explore the implicit biases internalized within the Latinx communities to heal from the wounds of oppression created by colonialism.
Systemic Racism in K-12 Education
Dr. Joseph Roy, Ed.D. MsEd, Superintendent & Three High School Students
Bethlehem Area School District
This session will provide local high school students the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Superintendent, Dr. Joseph Roy. During this session, students will address issues by sharing their personal experiences as students color in the Bethlehem Area School District.
The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Communities of Color
Dr. Rajika Reed, Ph.D., MPH, M.Ed., Senior Network Director of Epidemiology & Strategy St. Luke’s University Health Network
The session will discuss the role of inequity and the lack of resources that lend to disease spread. Data will be presented during this session to further understand and compare Covid-19 impacted communities by demographics, and the longer lasting impact this could have on communities across generations.

2. Participants will understand the impact of personal experiences on educational attainment among students of color.
3. Participants will understand the disproportionate Impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.
